Two of comedy’s biggest legends acted together for the first time ever. It was so long ago the footage is in black and white, but that doesn’t stop the duo of Tim Conway and Don Knotts from making comedy magic.
As the scene opens, a truck pulls up to a military tent. The only man awake in the tent rushes to wake everyone else up so they won’t get in trouble. The man fails to wake anyone, and then it is too late.
Don Knotts walks in, playing the role of the doctor of the army. The General who accompanies Don asks if Don has ever seen combat fatigue like this before. Don chuckles and then yells to try to wake everyone up.
No one moves at all. Don and the General open a chest and find Tim Conway sleeping inside. They wake him up, and Don tells Tim that they need to chat.
Tim starts telling his life story after Don prompts him. Tim tells Don that when he was six months old, he said, ‘Dada.’ Don asks if Tim hates his mom, and Tim responds, ‘No, but I can’t stand Aunt Sofie. You know why? Made me stop suckin’ my thumb. Ruined my whole beddy-bye time.’
Don and the General converse about whether they ever sucked their thumbs and then argue and lose track of their goal. They get back to questioning, and Tim asks if they had a ‘blankey’ growing up, and they talk about how the blankey made thumb-sucking so much more enjoyable.
They talk about the names they called the blankets, ‘Gong Gong’ and ‘Fuzzy Wuzzy.’ The General gets mad and tells Tim that he’s crazy and they should send him away. Don refuses and says Tim is sane and obviously just tired from the fight. Don pushes the general out as he yells, and Tim returns to sleep. Seeing these two comedians working together in their younger days of fame is incredible.
