'The Lennon Sisters' Sing Beautiful Harmony on 'Ed Sullivan'

Four women in matching pink and white outfits with gold accents pose together in front of a red and white backdrop.

‘The Lennon Sisters’ appeared on ‘The Ed Sullivan Show’ in 1970. Their wonderful singing and laid back style are enjoyable to listen to again and again. The sisters sang in tight harmonies with perfection.

The camera fades into the four sisters wearing pink sweater vests with pink skirts. They are sitting on two steps so each one can be seen clearly. The sisters all have the same short, poofy hairstyle, and they sit in front of a red barn door background.

‘The Lennon Sisters’ sing their famous tune ‘Where or When.’ They start to sing gently in unison at first, but then they split into beautiful, blended harmony as the song progresses.

The show tune ‘Where or When’ is from the 1937 Rodgers and Hart musical ‘Babes in Arms.’ The song was first performed by Ray Heatherton and Mitzi Green. The music also appeared in the film version of ‘Babes in Arms.’

The singing group consists of four sisters named Dianne, Peggy, Kathy, and Janet. From 1955 to 1968, the girls were regulars on ‘The Lawrence Welk Show.’ They even had their own show called ‘Jimmy Durante Presents the Lennon Sisters.’

Their biggest hit was their 1961 single ‘Sad Movies (Make Me Cry).’ The song reached the top of the charts in Japan and hit number 56 on the Billboard charts in the United States. It was their only number 1 single of their career.

The sisters went on to a successful Las Vegas residency, which lasted a decade. In 2001, they were inducted into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame. They are one of the most successful sister groups of all time.
