The Tonight Show is a late-night talk show that’s been a staple of American television for almost 70 years since it debuted on our screens in 1954. We have thoroughly enjoyed our weekly dose of the Tonight Show, with each comedian becoming an icon in their own right.

The show as we know it today first premiered on the NBC network on September 27, 1954, under the name, Tonight, with Steve Allen first being the first presenter.
The format of The Tonight Show is traced to a 40-minute local program in New York titled The Knickerbocker Beer Show. It premiered in 1953 on WNBT-TV and was later renamed The Steve Alan show. By 1954, it had been renamed Tonight, beginning its legendary run on the full NBC network.
The Tonight Show has been hosted by six comedians over its lengthy runtime, beginning with Steven Allen (1954-1957), Jack Paar (1957-1962), Johnny Carson for an impressive 30 years from (1962-1992), Jay Leno (1992-2014), Conan O’Brien (2009-2010), and finally Jimmy Fallon from 2014 until the present day.
Multiple guest hosts, such as Ernie Kovacs, filled in for Steve Allen during the 1956-57 season, filling in from time to time.

The Tonight Show’s premise is that of a variety show. It combines a nightly monologue, comedy sketches, and musical guest and celebrity interviews, all accompanied by the signature style of the show’s host.
The Tonight Show has changed very little over its existence. The show first aired under the name Tonight for a few years, but as Jack Paar took the reins, the show was renamed Tonight Starring Jack Paar.
Beginning with Carson’s debut, the network programmers, advertisers, and the show’s host would refer to the show by including the host’s name, such as The Tonight Show starring Johnny Carson. This has stuck until the present day, where we stuck until today where we have The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.

Johnny Carson holds the record for the longest serving host, with an impressive thirty years under his belt. However, Jay Leno has the record for the greatest number of televised shows.
Carson’s late-night show only produced three episodes a week, whereas, by Leno’s time, the show was pumping out five episodes per week; Leno himself was also Carson’s primary guest host for the last five years of Carson’s show.

The shortest-serving host was Conan O’Brien, who amassed a measly 146 episodes over the course of eight months. However, due to behind-the-scenes disputes, Jay Leno would take over again for an additional four years from 2010 – 2014.
The Tonight Show is the television’s longest-running talk show and the third longest-running show on NBC behind the news and talk shows, Today and Meet the Press.
The Tonight Show has remained a cultural part of American Television for nearly 70 years, bringing us a weekly dose of comedy, news, and value that is just not available anywhere else.
