Teen Songbird Sings A 70s Power Ballad and All The Judges Slam Their Buzzers

Molly Hocking The VoiceThe Voice: UK introduces yet another young talent to the world.  In the blind auditions, seventeen-year-old Molly Hocking gave such an emotional, heartfelt performance that three of the four coaches ended up turning their chairs for her.  Her rendition of the song “You Take My Breath Away” by Eva Cassidy was more than breathtaking. Pun intended.

Living in a small town in Cornwall, Molly works at her mom’s floral shop and sings just about whenever and wherever she can – in school plays, at weddings, special functions, and open mic nights in the area.  She’s been dreaming of becoming a singer since she was five, after getting the role of Mary in her school’s nativity play.  Back in 2014, she was a finalist in the national competition Teen Star, too.

Molly Hocking The VoiceIn an interview before the audition, Molly told the ITV show: “This is surreal. If I got a turn, it would mean everything. It’s what I’ve been gearing up for since I was about 10-years-old. I want to make my family proud and myself proud.”

As Molly’s audition starts, the dark theater is entirely silent.  A single piano note cuts through the stillness as the introduction to her song.  Molly opens her mouth and begins to sing, but before she can even finish the first phrase, coach Olly Mur slams his buzzer.

Somehow Molly’s voice seems to pierce right to the heart.  You could tell that even the judges were very moved.  Tears looked too well up in Jennifer Hudson’s eyes as her hand hovered over her buzzer.  She couldn’t resist for very long though and soon turned her chair for the teen.  Coach Tom Jones was the next hand to hesitate over his buzzer; he couldn’t seem to make up his mind. Just as Molly was finishing, he hit his buzzer for her, too.

Jennifer Hudson gushed in praise, “You sound like a songbird. Your voice is just so beautiful. You’re amazing!”

Olly was desperate to have Molly on his team. He told her, “From the first few notes I heard your voice, I was like, wow, special voice. You completely took my breath away.”  This compliment must have worked because she chose Olly Murs as her coach.
