The yellow dog scene from Support Your Local Gunfighter

Support Your Local Gunfighter is an iconic Western comedy film starring James Garner and Jack Elam. In this scene, Garner and Elam escort Miss Jenny around town for a little shopping.

Elam has the honor of carrying the lady’s pooch while Garner models some new hats for her. She selects the one she likes best and insists on buying it for him.

While she makes her purchase, Garner is confronted by a local gunslinger looking for a good old-fashioned pistol draw. He goads Garner into agreeing by calling him a yellow dog.

Garner says he’ll be outside in ten seconds. As the gunslinger turns to go, Garner draws his weapon and hits the gunslinger on the back of the head, knocking him out cold.

Garner asks Elam to hand him the iron, and he smashes the gunslinger’s right trigger finger. Garner apologizes to the lady for being witness to such an act of violence.

Before he can escort her back to her hotel, however, Elam points out that the gunslinger appears to be left-handed. Garner picks up the iron again and shoots another apologetic glance at the lady.

Both Elam and the lady wince as you hear the crunch of the gunslinger’s left trigger finger being crushed. This iconic Western comedy remains a cult classic to this day.
