When horses can’t pull their weight, they often end up getting slaughtered. Horse slaughter is supposedly a highly profitable business. Buyers for the slaughterhouses usually attend public auctions to purchase “unusable” horses and kill them. But thankfully some establishments are working towards breaking that trend and rescuing horses.
People from Gentle Giants Draft Horse Rescue attend these public auctions and choose the Draft horses they feel are the most viable candidates for rescue. They then outbid the killer-buyers by raising the bid just above the meat price. These horses then arrive at a farm in Mount Airy, MD where they can be safe and be themselves. They also get a chance to be placed in a forever home.
