This Man Has Been Living off-Grid for 20 Years on an Island He Built Himself

Shadow has dedicated his life to protecting the ecosystem in the Widgeon Slough area of BC, Canada. Using recycled and discarded objects, he built an incredible floating island where he has lived for 17 years.

Shadow's island has a two-story home, floating gardens, a compost shed, and even a floating chicken coop. He has expanded the island to meet his needs using salvaged materials and great respect for the environment.

He repurposed old logs and barrels polluting the river and made walkways and gardens for his floating home. It is easy to find materials through salvaging. Still, local people also drop off their excess materials to Shadow so he can expand the island.

His electric system is all off-grid. He used to have wind generators but replaced them with solar panels that can operate even in low light conditions. The new setup accounts for the environment around him, and the equipment is less at risk of breaking in lousy weather.

He spends months prepping firewood and stocking his pantry to survive winter. A lot of Shadow's sustainable lifestyle includes preparing for the next season and streamlining as many processes as possible.

Shadow also has a dedicated library and office space where he researches the local wildlife and environment. He does extensive research on what toxins are affecting the local species so he can reverse the issues.

This incredibly unique lifestyle is a testament to Shadow's dedication to the environment and living with nature. His adventures are often accompanied by challenges, but he says it is worth living the life of his dreams, even if other people don't understand it.
