Tires and blankets: bus station employees bring dogs in from the cold

If you live someplace where winter is wintry, you may find some aspects of the season aggravating, but at least you can look forward to spending some cozy nights indoors.

All you have to do is toss another blanket or two on the bed, make a nice big mug of hot chocolate, and settle in with a book, tablet, or your favorite TV show.

If you have a dog in your life, so much the better! Your canine friend will be delighted to curl up next to you for some warm snuggling.

For stray or otherwise homeless dogs, winter nights are anything but cozy. These unfortunate dogs don’t have a safe, warm place to sleep, let alone a friendly human at their side.

Brazil isn’t exactly famous for its winters, but in some parts of the country, the season does bring chilly nights. The city of Curitiba is a case in point. There, employees at a bus station noticed three stray dogs shivering outside and decided they deserved a warm, comfortable place to sleep. Casting the rule book aside, they invited the dogs in.

Max, Pitoco, and Zoinho were undoubtedly grateful for the food, water, and shelter from the cold. But then their human friends came up with a great idea. Using old tires and blankets, they fashioned improvised dog beds for each of them! The dogs became regulars, coming in from the cold every night. You’d think they’d look out of place in a bus station, but by all appearances, they seem to be entirely at home.

A local politician applauded the example set by the bus terminal employees: “Congratulations to the terminal staff. Everyone understands that these angels are there and have a right to exist. So many companies in Curitiba could follow this example, adopting a pet. Of course, it is not ideal, but at least there are those who are looking after them.”
