Only the bold or foolhardy would steal popcorn from a prince, courting royal rage. Once upon a time, such a theft would have had dire consequences. Prince Harry, however, took it with good humor when a little girl helped herself to his snack. Harry is the younger son of Prince Charles and Princess Diana and the fifth in line to the succession to the British throne.
Of Harry’s many projects, one is especially close to his heart: the Invictus Games, an Olympic-style competition first held in 2014. This is anything but your typical sporting event: all of the athletes are wounded or ailing soldiers and veterans — “invictus” means undefeated or unconquered in Latin. The events include archery, paralympic swimming, indoor rowing, wheelchair basketball, and wheelchair rugby.
Harry’s own description: “These Games have shone a spotlight on the ‘unconquerable’ character of service men and women and their families and their ‘Invictus’ spirit. These Games have been about seeing guys sprinting for the finish line and then turning round to clap the last man in. They have been about teammates choosing to cross the line together, not wanting to come second, but not wanting the other guys to either. These Games have shown the very best of the human spirit.”
The popcorn incident occurred in Toronto, where Harry was watching a volleyball match at the Invictus Games. A little girl named Emily Henson was sitting next to him and couldn’t stop herself from raiding the royal popcorn.
When he looked in the other direction, a tiny hand reached over and grabbed what it could. She got away with it until suddenly she didn’t! Far from being angry, Harry made some silly faces to get some laughs from her and then gave her some more of the popcorn.
