Told it’s time to go home, a dog enjoying a day at the park begs to differ

Dogs are often thought of as loyal and obedient. Loyal they undoubtedly are, but when it comes to being obedient, well, there’s always room for improvement. This golden retriever loves going to the local park so much that when it’s time to go home, he makes a scene worthy of a toddler who won’t leave the candy aisle.

We really can’t blame him for wanting to stay. For our canine friends, any day you get taken to the park is a really, really good day. A park abounds in mental stimulation: squirrels to chase, other dogs to make friends with (or chase), unfamiliar people to size up, new sights and exciting smells. If a dog’s human parents didn’t bring a tennis ball or Frisbee, a park always has sticks to fetch.

As you’ll see in the video posted below, this golden retriever has mastered the art of using inertia to his advantage. He may have been thinking, “Heh heh. If I was a Chihuahua or Shih Tzu, dad would just pick me up, but I’m a 70 pounder! If I don’t want to move, we’re staying!” This dog’s human dad does his best, indicating that it’s time to go home. Trying to lift him by his front legs, even gently and playfully, doesn’t work. This dog is determined to remain firmly attached to the ground. Dad has probably had to deal with this kind of behavior many times before and knew what he was going to have to do next: put a twig in his own mouth! “The stick-in-the-mouth trick is what got him to get his butt up.” And indeed, the dog who was lying on his back trying to look like he was about to die suddenly gets up and walks around, looking happy and healthy — and perhaps a little smug, having made his point!
