Sir Tom Jones is an incredible singer with a storied career spanning decades. His performance of ‘Lazarus Man’ is exciting and inventive. Tom performs at the Shepherd’s Bush Empire in London.
‘Lazarus Man’ is a song taken from his latest album, ‘Surrounded By Time.’ Tom keeps turning out hits, and this song is no different. He starts the performance with an energetic ‘Yeah’ in his signature deep baritone voice.
The tune’s verses are narrated, so Tom holds off on belting until the chorus. There are mystical green lights on stage surrounding Tom, dressed in all black. The venue is small, and the band includes two guitar players, a bass player, a drummer, and a keyboard player.
Tom proclaims, ‘I’m Lazarus Man!’ yelling with a crack in his voice. He is projected on a screen in a blurry image behind the band. The psychedelic music accompanies him as he sings about the Biblical Lazarus.
Most of the song’s background is similar, with a swirling keyboard and some bluesy guitar and drums playing a tribal-style tom-tom beat. There’s a superb lead guitar solo and even a keyboard solo at the end reminiscent of ‘The Doors.’
Again Tom sings ‘I’m Lazarus Man,’ but there’s a heavy chorus and delayed effect on his voice this time. The song ends with an epic jam, and Tom signals the last cue as the band hits the final chord.
Known for his hits, ‘It’s Not Unusual’ and ‘What’s New Pussycat?’ Tom Jones is a living legend. His newest endeavor is his gig on ‘The Voice U.K.,’ where he judges and sings whenever he pleases. It is great to see Tom still enjoys performing and entertaining a crowd.
