Hey there, my fellow nostalgia lover! Remember those good old days when we’d crack open a cold Vernors ginger ale and enjoy that sweet, heavily spiced, gingery crisp taste? Ahh, the memories! It’s hard to believe that Vernors has been around since 1862, making it one of the oldest, if not the oldest, continuously available soft drinks in America. This unique ginger ale, created by Michigan’s first licensed pharmacist, has brought joy to generations, and I bet you have some fond memories of it too.

You might recall the story of how Vernors came to be. James Vernor, a Detroit pharmacist, concocted a new drink before going off to fight in the Civil War. When he returned four years later, he discovered that the wood’s aging process had transformed the beverage inside his secret oak cask. The rest, as they say, is history. Vernor opened his own pharmacy and soda fountain, and soon Vernors became a beloved beverage all across Michigan and the Midwest.

Remember how Vernors was considered a cure-all for minor ailments? People would turn to the fizzy drink for stomach aches, hangovers, and even sore throats. Its strong ginger bite seemed to have mythical healing powers, and it became a staple in many households. It’s no wonder that soul singer Aretha Franklin even used Vernors in a glaze recipe for her Christmas ham! And who could forget the refreshing summer treat known as a Boston Cooler – that heavenly mix of Vernors and vanilla ice cream?

Now, let’s talk about that jolly winking gnome, shall we? He’s been the official mascot of Vernors since the company’s early days. But did you know that he didn’t always have a name? In the early 1970s, the company ran a “Name the Gnome” campaign, and the winning name was Jerome the Gnome. However, over the years, his name changed to Woody, possibly to reflect the ginger ale’s original wood barrel aging process.

Today, Vernors is part of the Dr. Pepper Snapple Group, which has helped it expand to 33 states. But let’s be honest – Michigan will always be its true home, and the memories of sipping on a Vernors on a warm summer day are something we’ll always cherish.
