I would have loved to be a fly on the wall when the two Sasketoon officers in this video got their fateful call on their shoulder radios. “Dispatch, you have something for us?” “I do… though it’s a bit unusual.” “Unusual? How?” “You’ll have to go take a look for yourselves. Civilians called it in.” “OK. Let’s go take a look…. Ducks? You want us to escort ducks to the Saskatchewan River?” “IT’S A SLOW DAY!”
That brings us to the video. We see two officers walking alongside their bikes while a mama duck and her little cute, fuzzy, adorable, tiny… OK, I’ll stop… ducklings waddle ahead of them. It’s possibly the slowest-moving yet cute processions that I’ve ever seen, but it’s one that I never want to end. People are so taken aback at this sight, they stop and take pictures with their cell phones.
The officers lead the duck brigade, all of whom are acting like they get police escorts to their river every day, through several crowded areas and get them to the river, where, once they ascertain that the ducks are safe and sound, turn and leave just as the video ends. Both of them probably look at each other like, “Our families are never going to believe this. Also, what do you think the odds are that most of the newspapers will have a ‘JUST DUCKY’ headline ready”
This event probably broke up an extremely monotonous day for these two policemen and it gave them a memory that they will carry with them for the rest of their lives. It’s also a good story for the rest of us, since unfortunately, the police tend to be in the news for bad things that happen rather than good ones. Here, we see something that makes us smile and respect police officers rather than scorn them. Let’s see more of those.
