Many of us long to find a job that we love. We want a job that can leave us feeling fulfilled, and when we find that job, there are a handful of rare and seemingly impossible moments that we will remember for the rest of our lives. For these veterinary students working with horses, that moment came sooner rather than later.
The doctors working with this horse expected it to have a healthy and normal baby, but they soon found out that this would be no ordinary pregnancy. This horse would be giving birth to not one but two new horses. This is an event that most horse breeders and equestrian professionals have gone their entire careers only hearing about.
Unfortunately, giving birth to twins is incredibly dangerous for both the mother horse and the twins. The odds of the twins being born alive are 1 in 10,000 and the odds of them surviving the first two weeks is 1 in 15,000. This is why the team at Oregon State University was working around the clock making sure that these twins would be born as safely as possible.
