It is said that life is not about the things you buy or the wealth you accumulate, but about the things you experience. This cannot be truer as in the end, when our time in this earth concludes, we are not taking a single thing with us. For most of us, the best things in life are the simplest ones. One of them is giving people a helping hand when they need it.
For some reason, this is something that many people have forgotten. One thing I learned from my father was being charitable. My father liked to visit the poor on Holiday season, for example, he would go and spend one entire day where he would take them food and clothing. Some of them had been living in the streets for a long time.
Something else he would do is visit the elderly. When I asked them why he would want to spend an entire day with someone he didn’t even know, he would tell me, “Son, if I don’t spend one day with them, who’s going to?” He also would tell me that in a way, he was visiting his own mother who had passed away not so long before. He would also take them small presents and remind them of the true meaning of Christmas.
So, for very early on, I learned the importance of giving and that the best moments in life are not the ones we buy, but the ones we create. I was fortunate enough to meet my great-great grandmother when I was around 7 years old. We had gone to visit my mother’s family on a summer vacation. For me, it was an exciting time because I had grown up far from them. I got to meet all my cousins, uncles, aunts and grandparents as well.
The next day we arrived, my mother took me to see my great-great-grandmother, her name was Victoria. Victoria was living by herself in a small house located just in front of the family home, which is where her daughter (my grandmother) lived. She was very short and could not see or hear very well. I remember my mother telling me to speak up or she would not be able to hear me.
Meeting your great-great grandparent is something that not many of us get to do. Many people don’t even make it past 40 nowadays. The following video embodies one of those special moments. The mother in the video had given birth 5 days before and goes to see her great-grandfather. When she hands him his great-great-grandson, something magical happens. You won’t want to miss this one!
