“Country star Scotty McCreery’s newest album, Seasons Change, perfectly describes where his career has taken since his days on American Idol. He has gone from sixteen-year-old singing show contestant to hit-making superstar. His newest album has a more mature element to it, while still maintaining his trademark style.
Scotty wrote the third single from Seasons Change, “In Between,” along with songwriters Frank Rogers, Jessi Alexander, and Jonathan Singleton. It was written during the same week that “Five More Minutes” was written for the same album.
One of the lines from the song best describes how Scotty views himself now: “I ain’t all holy water, and I ain’t all Jim Beam; I’m somewhere in between.” This album is pivotal for Scotty McCreery. At times, every artist needs to reinvent themselves if they want to continue to grow. Scotty realized that while he would be nothing without his singing competition roots, he needed move past that. Where one chapter closes, another one opens.
When this song was written, Scotty hadn’t yet married his longtime girlfriend and high school sweetheart, Gabi Dugal. Ironically, one of the lines in the song talks about how he wasn’t ready to settle down and get married quite yet, but by the time the song became a single, he was settling happily into married life.
It just goes to show that everyone has “in between” stages in their lives. That’s one of the reasons Scotty is so proud of this song – it relates to just about everyone. He always wants his music to be relatable.
Scotty writes about what he knows. The lyrics of the song seem somewhat autobiographical – the all-American country boy who is trying to produce songs that balance his love for both traditional and contemporary music. If this album has anything to say about it, he seems to be accomplishing that.
As far as the theme of “In Between,” the North Carolina native said that it was about balance. Everyone has different sides and is trying to figure out how to balance them all. It can take a lot of juggling to do that.
