When they pour lava onto a bed of ice, they expected it to explode. Instead, what happens is infinitely more fascinating.
The folks over at Outrageous Acts of Science wanted to know what would happen when lava is poured onto ice. They gathered a molten lava expert, geologist Jeff Carson and an artist by the name of Bobby Sacky, and got to experimenting.
Surprisingly, the combination of molten lava and ice didn’t produce an explosion. Rather, the lava bubbled on top of the ice, continuing to flow as it cooled. It’s eerily beautiful to see, this combination of extremes in temperature.
