Waylon Jennings Creates History With His Theme Song For Classic Show ‘Dukes Of Hazzard’

History was made on January 26, 1979, when The Dukes of Hazzard aired for the first time on CBS. Featuring daring cousins Bo, Luke, and Daisy Duke, this show was one of the most popular shows on air at the time. With a run of six years, the characters are cultural icons even to this day.

The show centers around Bo and Luke, racing around Hazzard County in their Dodge Charge they dubbed General Lee. They go on crazy adventures on each episode, often finding themselves dealing with corrupt government officials like the county commissioner Boss Hogg and Sheriff Roscoe P Coltrane.

Just as memorable as the show itself is the Dukes of Hazzard theme song, written by country music legend Waylon Jennings.

Jennings worked as a narrator on the film Moonrunners, which was the inspiration for The Dukes of Hazzard. He was invited to do the narration for the show, as well, and got the opportunity to write the show’s theme. He released two versions, one for the show and one for radio and commercial use.

Jennings released the commercial version of the song in 1980, as a single from his album Music Man. Dukes of Hazzard was enjoying huge popularity at that point, and the song went straight to the top of the charts.
