Why We Need to Teach Geography

Jay Leno is a beloved late-night host and comedian. He is known for his hysterical street interviews where random citizens are put on the spot to answer questions. The answers are always funny and unexpected. This time he tackles geography.

The National Center for Education Statistics revealed shocking numbers that tell us students don’t know geography very well. Only 3% of the middle school students tested had an advanced level of geographic understanding, and 1% of high schoolers did.

If those stats weren’t enough, the great comedian Jay Leno took to the streets to interview some random strangers. The first victim is unaware of the language spoken in Britain, and she answers, ‘They speak British!’ Jay asks her if she knows any British words, and she replies, ‘No!’

A man in a black jacket and a woman in a striped shirt are engaged in conversation, with a microphone visible.

Jay asks a high school student named Lindsay, ‘What’s the world’s tallest mountain?’ She replies, ‘It’s not Mt. Rushmore.’ He tries to help her, saying, ‘Do you Ever-rest?’ The clue finally works!

Jay asks another student if there’s any way to get from France to England using the English Channel. The student tells him he thinks there is a bridge that goes underwater, and Jay can’t believe his ears!

A man in a dark coat and a woman in a baseball cap are engaged in conversation, with a blurred background of a store.

Leno meets up with Caitlyn, who attends high school in Arkansas. He asks her how the school system is, and she replies, ‘Very good!’ Jay proceeds to ask her how many oceans there are, and she says, ‘I only been to one in Florida.’ He follows up, asking, ‘Which ocean was that?’ She says, ‘The Pacific Ocean!’ Jay can’t help but laugh.

Later, Jay asks her what a group of people from Denmark would be called, and she responds, ‘Jewish people.’ Every interview is so funny and revealing. We have to hope for our students to get better at geography before Jay talks to them again!
