You don’t want to mess with Sophia Petrillo

The Golden Girls featured one of the best senior ensembles on television. All of them were hilarious, but the one with the funniest one-liners was undoubtedly Sophia.

Sophia, played by Estelle Getty, was the mother of Dorothy, played by Beatrice Arthur. Sophia came from Italy and had plenty of stories. She also had the best insults.

This compilation video starts perfectly with Blanche, played by Rue McClanahan, citing how Sophia is known for her insults. Sophia bites back by calling Blanche a slut. An angered Blanche pops Sophia’s balloon.

In the first clip, Sophia speaks to her daughter about how grateful she was to have Dorothy. Dorothy then asks if Sophia was ever disappointed in her. Sophia remarks ‘A little’ to a hilarious response from the audience.

Sophia targets all of the Golden Girls. She, at one point, stresses how Rose (Betty White) should be seeing a psychiatrist. Her rationale is that Rose names gingerbread men.

Sophia once insults all of the Golden Girls when the three women end up in jail. Dorothy, Rose, and Blanche tell Sophia they’re not guilty of prostitution. Sophia believes them, stressing how cops are too stupid to realize nobody would pay money to have sex with them.

In an episode where Blanche feels vulnerable, she quickly decides to take a chance on love again. Sophia then states a phrase she says she’s used many times: ‘Sluts just heal quicker.’

Sophia helps Dorothy out with her presentation to get it perfectly timed. Dorothy then asks Sophia what should be cut from the presentation. Her recommendation is her throat.

Perhaps the best description of The Golden Girls comes when Rose describes everybody perfectly. She remarks that Sophia is the old one and that she is the nice one. An insulted Sophia notes that she doesn’t view Rose as all that nice.

The insults don’t even have to be about the living. Sophia gets rather savage when speaking at a man’s funeral. She says she loved the man in the coffin who slept around with many women.

Her insults are then directed at the rest of the attendants, stating it was no easy task to satisfy them all sexually.

Sophia never wastes an opportunity for a snide remark. During a tender moment, she remarks on how beautiful it is when the Golden Girls come together. She then leaves promptly, telling them to fill her in when she wakes up.

The relationship Sophia has with her daughter is blunt. Within these clips, she insults Dorothy’s shoe size, choice of dresses, and awkward stage. That awkward stage is noted to have lasted for fifty years.

Sophia was always the king of old stories and didn’t like being upstaged. She interrupts Blanche’s tale of youth when she starts by saying she was 19 at the time. Sophia remarks, ‘Fine’ and moves on.

Despite being a massive draw of her character, Sophia was more than just insults. She would also bring motherly love and honesty when it was called for. As the oldest Golden Girl, she had a grander perspective on life.

The Golden Girls lasted for 180 episodes with a sequel series and spin-off. It’s easy enough to see why it was such a hit. Sophia was undoubtedly a big part of the show’s comedy, bringing all the perfectly timed insults with absurd passivity.
