Young Sonny Bono and Cher Sing Their Hit Song. It Still Rings True Today For Many.

Dating and marriage can be hard. There are a lot of pitfalls and tribulations. But the basic premise that holds it together is that it’s a partnership. Each person in the relationship/marriage should have each other’s back through thick and thin. They should trust that the other person will support them. That’s the premise of the song that’s played on this video.

We see the duo of Sonny Bono and Cher… you don’t need to know her last name… she’s Cher, for crying out loud. They are on “Top of the Pops” and they are singing their hit song, “I Got You Babe.” It’s a sweet tune of love and support for each other. It’s something that every couple should have, married or not. Too bad they didn’t last that long as a couple, but they remained intertwined for a long time.

Sonny’s haircut in this clip could best be described as “Pageboy” from medieval times. This was 1965, after all. Cher was really young in this video too, being only 18. She obviously was ready for fame and fortune in show business, since the camera was already in love with her. Sonny is smitten to be standing next to her as they sing the song together. He seems to be thinking, “I’m singing this… with her? Wow. Am I lucky.”

One thing that got this song back into the mainstream during the 1980s was when it was the song that was playing on the radio when Bill Murray’s Phil Connors wakes up to the same day over and over again in “Groundhog Day”. Cher’s career took off again and Sonny got into politics a few years before his death in 1998 from a skiing accident. Even though they were divorced, Cher gave a eulogy at his funeral. She had her babe… all the way until the end.

I love this version of the song. They are so young and they look so happy together. Don’t you think so? What’s your favorite version? Feel free to list it in the comments. It’d be great if you also “Like” us on Facebook.
