Back in high school, I had a friend who would come on weekend trips to my parent’s beach house. I remember coming back from the bathroom one night and seeing him sleeping in his bed with his eyes open. The sight freaked me out. What was I gonna do? Did he die? He was too young. I thought about getting a small mirror and holding it over his mouth to see if it fogged. Then he sighed and shifted around in his sleep. Phew. I had the same thought when I first saw this video of this kitten.
Like my friend, this kitty Duslo is sleeping on his back. Then his eyes kind of open. I watch for a few seconds. They wouldn’t put a sad video up, would they? Maybe as a PSA of some kind, like for the kitty version of SIDS – sudden infant death syndrome. “DON’T LEAVE YOUR KITTEN SLEEPING ON ITS BACK!!” a stern voice would say. “OTHERWISE YOU HAVE TRAGEDIES LIKE THIS.” Fortunately, the kitten kicks some to avert some concern.
A lot of animal videos can be cute but in another context they could be seen as kind of freaky. I had the same think happen with my older male cat when he was sleeping on the sofa. He flipped over on his back and just stretched out fully and was sleeping with his legs in the air. I didn’t know what to make this of it at first – he usually sleeps curled in a ball or on his side. Not like this. Like the kitty, he was fine.
In the long run, cuteness wins out. Duslo twitches and sighs sometimes, but with his paws crossed like that, it feels like he’s in an open-air funeral pose. Fortunately, he’s fine. I’d just have a mirror handy just in case…
