When Terry and Anna’s relationship hit the one year mark, he decided it was time to give her something very special. He made her a necklace, including a pendant that he carved from a block of Tasmanian wood. She loved it and wore it every day! It was one-of-a-kind and the fact that he’d made it himself was incredibly sweet. What Anna didn’t know was that the pendant had a hidden gem inside! As Terry later told the British newspaper The Independent, “I always loved the idea of giving someone a gift, where the person did not know its true value until years later.”
For a year and a half, Anna wore the necklace but had no idea there was something inside the pendant. There were some nervous moments for Terry. “There were some occasions where I was really worried; at one point, I thought she was going to trade it with a blacksmith at a market… but luckily I didn’t need to crash tackle her. My biggest moment of panic was when we went through airport security the first time. I hadn’t thought about the fact that she might be asked to put it through the X-ray, which could have very quickly turned into an airport security proposal.”
Finally, in 2016, Terry realized it was time to reveal the necklace’s secret. They went to Smoo Cave in Scotland (the name means “hiding place” in Old Norse, as it happens), somewhere they’d always wanted to visit. Making some excuse, he borrowed the necklace and stepped a short distance away. “It had a really small amount of glue holding the two parts together, so I loosened it with a knife quickly… and then put it in my pocket ready. She stood there with this completely confused and dumbfounded look on her face, and when she finally worked out what had just happened, she yelled, ‘Yes!’ and pounced on me.”
