Retirees make spectacular parody video of Taylor Swift’s “Shake It Off”

When you think of retirement home activities what probably comes to mind are games of bridge, knitting circles, shuffleboard, and the occasional day trip. The residents of one retirement community wanted something different and they found it: making a music video. Taylor Swift’s “Shake It Off” was a perfect vehicle for their energy and creativity.

Country/pop sensation Taylor Swift has had an amazing career. Although not even 30 years old, she’s already racked up 10 Grammys, 12 Country Music Association Awards, 8 Academy of Country Music Awards, and the list goes on. She’s been an object of media fascination for years. Her 2014 song “Shake It Off” is her answer to critics as well as the overly curious. As she told Rolling Stone: “I’ve had every part of my life dissected — my choices, my actions, my words, my body, my style, my music. When you live your life under that kind of scrutiny, you can either let it break you, or you can get really good at dodging punches. And when one lands, you know how to deal with it. And I guess the way that I deal with it is to shake it off.”

Taylor Swift’s music video for “Shake It Off” is downright quirky and this made recreating it a lot of fun for the retirees. 50 of them took part in the project, along with some staff and grandchildren. Their combined ages added up to about 4,000 years, but that didn’t keep them from making a high-energy music video featuring crazy costumes and hilarious props (pom-poms, finger puppets, walkers, canes, feather dusters). Ukuleles were even played: a favorite instrument of Taylor Swift’s. They had some great dance moves, although some special effects were required.
