I was just reminiscing about the good old days and thought of something that’s sure to bring back memories. Remember Western Auto? You know, the iconic American retail store that sold replacement auto parts and so much more. Oh, what a time that was!

So, let’s go back to the very beginning, shall we? Picture this: It’s 1909, and young George Pepperdine, at just 23 years old, had a vision to start his own retail store selling auto parts. George’s mail order business turned into the first Western Auto Supply Company in Kansas City, Missouri, in 1914. Talk about a success story, am I right?
Now, who could forget that the rise in popularity of automobiles during that time made George’s business absolutely thrive? And just like that, by the late 1920s, Western Auto Supply Company had expanded to a whopping 170 stores! They were a multi-million dollar company – pretty impressive, huh?

Of course, Western Auto was more than just auto parts. Remember those awesome Western Flyer bicycles, sports equipment, and even firearms they sold? It was like a treasure trove of goodies every time we walked in.
In 1961, Western Auto was sold to the Beneficial Finance Corporation, which held onto it until 1985. But then, with the rise of Walmart, they had to shift their focus back to auto parts. By 1988, they were sold again to Sears, who restructured the chain and converted some of them into Parts America branded stores. Unfortunately, by 2006, the Western Auto brand was no longer licensed to anyone.

Do you know what’s amazing, though? The Western Auto headquarters in Kansas City has since been converted to condominiums, but the giant sign at the top of the building still stands tall, all lit up at night with its giant circle arrow. It’s like a beacon of nostalgia shining brightly for all of us who remember the good times at Western Auto.
So, before you go, I’d recommend taking a trip down memory lane and watching this video of Western Auto – Life in America. Trust me; it’ll return all those fond memories in no time. And hey, why not like and share the video with your friends? Because nothing beats reminiscing together about the good times we had.
