The answer reaches a long way back to the original 1964 stop animation movie. The original movie has a scene that is no longer available in the version we see today.
In the full, original version of “ Rudolph, The Red-Nosed Reindeer,” Cornelius strikes the ground with his pickaxe and then licks it.
He then says “Peppermint! What I’ve been searching for all my life! I’ve struck it rich! I’ve got me a peppermint mine! Wahoo.” After all, he is near a magical land.
But the scene was deleted in 1965, while the abridged version is what we see today.
This season when you are watching this old classic, look for this odd behavior and share your new-found knowledge with your family members! It’s cute and it will defintely bring back those fond memories.
