Aiden Heath is a young boy who was struck with tragedy and difficulty when he was very young. At just four years of age, he was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes, which meant that he would have to carry an extra responsibility for most of his life. A service dog can do wonders for a child who has to face this kind of struggle, but sadly, Aiden’s mom could not afford a service dog for him. Service dogs help detect when a diabetic person’s blood sugar is low before they even know.
She told the boy that if he saved enough money, he could buy one for himself one day. This seemed almost impossible at the time, since a perfectly trained dog like the one he needed could cost upwards of $10,000. This is because service dogs trained for diabetes can sniff low glucose levels even before an electronic monitor could, and that difference can save lives. A dog’s unique sense of smell enables them to be highly skilled at this and many types of dogs can be trained, not just one specific breed.
After four years of struggling with the disease, Aiden has not given up, and he’s collected a bunch of jars of pennies to achieve his amazing goal. His perseverance has inspired other to donate to his GoFundMe page, and with the help of kind strangers on the internet, he’ll be able to train his new puppy, Angel, to be a service dog for him.
