Sonny And Cher Make Classic Appearance On TV Show. Their Chemistry Then Was Off The Charts.

When it comes to duos, Sonny and Cher are up there when it comes to name recognition. Even though they weren’t together for decades, and one of the two of them has also been dead for nearly 20 years, people still have sparks of recognition in their eyes if someone says, “Hey, remember Sonny and Cher?” Well, one thing that helps keep them in the public’s consciousness is having videos like this up on YouTube.

Sonny Bono and Cher are on “The Ed Sullivan Show”. It’s 1965 and Cher looks so young here. Sonny had barely turned 30 himself, though he always looked a bit older than he really was. He just had one of those faces. They are singing their timeless classic, “I Got You Babe”. They see to be in love, constantly turning to each other to sing the next part. It’s just too bad that the clip is so short.

The song was inspired by Bob Dylan’s “It Ain’t Me Babe”. Sonny found it way too cynical and wanted to come up with something that was the polar opposite. Thus, “I Got You Babe”, which many consider to be one of the greatest duets of all time, was born. This far outlived Sonny and Cher’s marriage, and many groups, including UB40, have covered it. David Bowie and Madonna have also sang it… though not together.

Seeing Sonny in this outfit reminded me of that classic “Golden Girls” moment… wait. Did I just call the “Golden Girs” classic? I’m feeling faint. Anyways, it was when Dorothy and Sophia came out dressed as Sonny and Cher. Sophia played the headband-wearing, Fu-Manchu sporting Sonny, while Dorothy played the hair-tossing and lip-licking Cher. They sang “I Got You Babe” while a bewildered Rose played the piano. I still laugh every time I see this.

Sonny and Cher were among the oddest of couples, but they became icons during their time. What did you think of them? What was your favorite song of theirs? Feel free to list it in the comments section. Also, it would be great if you “Like” us on Facebook.
