Have you ever been apart from the people you love for very long? I’ve had that happen a few times and it has been one of the most difficult things to handle. You see, I’ve always been a person who loves to be surrounded by people. I sometimes find it hard to be by myself. And it wasn’t my education, either. I love having my family around and being able to provide for them.
But there have been a few times during my work life that I have needed to travel and leave my family behind. I’ve held positions at a couple of companies that require a person to travel a lot. I have missed my family dearly, and that’s considering that I’ve been only away for a few days. The longest I’ve been apart from them was for about 7 months.
During that time, I was in contact with them through video calls every single day. I have to say that I am very grateful for everything we have at this point in time. I still remember how it was like when my father used to work. Back then, very few people had cell phones. Basically, you needed to be rich to be able to afford a cell phone, or at least to be very well off.
So, using the hotel phone or a pay phone was good enough for most people. At that time, long distance was one of the biggest charges on your phone bill. Calls back then were not that lengthy. You would call, say what you needed to say, and got off the phone before another minute went by. That’s what I would be told by my dad. “Phones are not for long conversations, they are for short exchanges,” is what he used to say.
But today, everything has changed. What hasn’t, is the need for many people to be away from their families. Many companies have gone global, and with them, the need to travel to the farthest corners of the world. When your loved ones get to come back, everyone is filled with emotion and just want them to get here, so you can hug them and tell them how much you missed them.
