Baby Is Abandoned And Left To Freeze To Death — But Now Watch What This Hero Cat Does

When you hear that a hero animal rescued someone from mortal danger, you’d probably assume that it was a dog — most likely a collie — that saved the day. In this case, the hero was a cat named Masha.

Masha is a stray who lives in the town of Obninsk in western Russia. With her luxuriant fur, she looks a lot like a Maine Coon. It has to help a lot during those cold Russian winters! At times, though, the weather is too cold even for a toughie like Masha. Fortunately, there are some good-hearted people in the neighborhood who’ll let her come inside and give her some food.

One of these neighborhood friends is 68 year-old Irina Lavrova. On a bitterly cold winter day, she was taking the trash out when she heard a strange noise coming from the basement. Listening more closely, she realized it was a cat mewing. Thinking it was Masha and that she might be in trouble, Irina hurried down to the frigid basement. What she found was unbelievable! There was a baby boy, not more than three months old, lying in a cardboard box. Masha the cat was lying next to him, keeping him warm. “She is very calm and friendly, so when I heard her mewing, I at first thought she might have hurt herself. But clearly, it was just her maternal instincts taking over and she wanted to protect the child.”

Investigators subsequently determined that the baby boy must have been there several hours and that he would have frozen to death if the cat hadn’t kept him warm and cried for help. The baby was rushed to a nearby hospital and he turned out to be perfectly healthy. Masha wasn’t done putting her maternal instincts on display: she chased after the ambulance! Rumor has it that Masha’s friends in the neighborhood are spoiling her rotten with all sorts of tasty treats.
