Carol Burnett finds out if money is the #1 cause of divorce

‘The Carol Burnett Show’ was a hit even in Season 1, and this hysterical sketch from Episode 20 shows us why. Carol and Harvey Korman were excellent comedic actors together, and in this sketch, they play an unhappily married couple. Carol is on a call with her mother as she complains about how she’s so bored in her marriage and she barely gets to see Jeffrey, played by Harvey.

Harvey walks in, and Carol says to her mother, “I’m going to make one last stab at this marriage.” Harvey walks out, and Carol stands in the window with her hands wide to welcome him home, But he hustles around the house, getting ready and ignoring her.

Carol tries to tell him that she is leaving him if he continues to be so busy.
He speaks into a tape recorder to capture his ideas, and Carol gets frustrated, grabs it, and starts singing, “Love for sale!” Harvey calls her by the wrong name, and she cries.

He tells her she wanted all these fancy things, and when they married, he made 50 dollars a week. Now, he makes more so she can have nice things. Harvey says, “You can’t have me and a big income.”

He tells Carol he will buy her a husband if she wants it. They blame each other for being driven by money. He asks why she’d spend 200 dollars on a vase. She says, “I’ll show you what this vase means to me.” Carol slams it on the floor.

She blames him for wanting to show off his alligator shoes. He throws them out the window and says, “That’s what I think about my alligator shoes.” Harvey looks out the window in concern multiple times. Still, they continue throwing things out the window, trying to prove that nothing means anything to them.

They throw their clothes and all their furniture out. Their final thing is Carol’s wig; she says she’ll do it if Harvey does. She takes off her wig, Harvey takes off his fake mustache, and the doorbell rings. It’s the police, and they’re both under arrest. The phone rings, and Carol picks up and tells her mom, “Things are going beautifully. Jeffrey and I are going out together.”
