Valentine’s Day reminds us of falling in love, flowers, candy, cards, and, of course, Cupid. A video featuring the king of late-night talk shows, Johnny Carson, is creating tears of laughter for his portrayal of Cupid.
In this parody, Ed McMahon interviews Dan Cupid (known simply as Cupid) on Valentine’s Day. Johnny Carson plays Dan Cupid, and from the start, he has the audience in stitches with his costume and mannerisms.
Dressed in a pink spandex suit with cute translucent ferry wings, the veteran talk show host is also sporting the bow and arrows that Cupid is famous for. He gets the laughter going immediately by erroneously stating that he was named after the Patron Saint of Hickeys.
The Tonight show received six Primetime Emmy Awards and numerous other television awards. He was also awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1992. Johnny was on the USS Pennsylvania on his way to fight in World War 2 when he discovered his talent to entertain.
Lucky for Johnny, the war ended before his ship reached the battlefront. But during his time in the navy, he realized his talent to entertain. He performed a magic trick for United States Secretary of the Navy James V. Forrestal. Entertaining and amusing someone as cranky as Forrestal made him realize that he had talent.
In this video, Johnny gets very close to crossing the boundary of acceptable family television with hilarious consequences. When Ed McMahon asks Dan Cupid about Valentines and Winter, he says it is cold enough to ‘freeze your quiver off.’ Further on in the video, Ed asks Cupid what one should do to win a lady’s favor. Cupid’s response is dark but humorous. He quickly replies: ‘Get her drunk and threaten her family.’ The live audience bursts out in laughter, and even Ed struggles to keep his composure.
They even bring celebrities into the conversation, and poor Liz Taylor also receives a few blows from Dan Cupid. Even though it is 40 years later, the jokes still remain relevant and get you giggling right from the start.
