Dozens of police officers gathered at the veterinary office to pay their respects and say goodbye to their friend, a retired K-9 called Sultan. Sultan was a veteran of the Yarmouth Police Department in Maine and he had touched the hearts and lives of many officers in the force. And this video shows the last trip of 13 year old Sultan before he got put down.
Sultan was a fitting name for this courageous German Shepherd. He was a beloved member of the police force and was like a family member to them. His courage and intelligence were noted by all, and he was not only loved, but respected. You can tell by the way they say goodbye and salute him that he was just as valuable to them as a human.
Sultan had a happy life, but as of late his health had been deteriorating and it became clear to the officers what they needed to do. In his honor, dozens of officers from all across southern Maine came and made the trip to the veterinary office and stood in formation, saluting Sultan as he was carried past them into the building. You can clearly see the pain in their eyes.
In one of the photos, Sultan is looking up at his owner with such love and adoration. It brought me to tears at that point in the clip. Law enforcement K9’s are truly unique in the dog world, and Sultan was certainly special to all that knew him.
