You never know what you’re going to do if you’re confronting the scene of a terrible accident. How you’re going to console those who have been affected. Yes, emergency technicians and police officers may have had training in this, but training is very different from being at the actual scene of an accident. These are real people, not actors in a training exercise. Colorado police officer Nick Struck did an amazing job, as you see in this video.
Struck came to the scene of a rollover accident on a Colorado highway and found that all the occupants had been thrown from the car – a father, mother, and four kids. The father had passed away, but people were still working on saving the others. He found the youngest girl, and picked her up. Trying to comfort her, he sang “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star” to the girl. A witness took a picture and it wound up going viral.
It was clear that Struck was, well, struck with emotion when thinking about his own daughter and what life would be like for her if he had been the one in the accident. That’s why he was so gentle with this little girl. She was so lucky that he was there to try to shield her from the horror of seeing her father dead. It spared her, for the time, about learning about death at such a young age.
I hope that the mother and other siblings all turned out to be OK. Of course, the questions about seatbelts need to be asked, since so many of them were ejected from the vehicle. I just feel bad for all the children who are going to be growing up without a father. Then again, they just have to watch this video when they need to see an example of a dad who puts their needs before his own. Maybe they will sing “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star” to their own children.
