Some people say that pigs aren’t smart, but the pig in the video below makes it obvious that idea just isn’t true. Not only are they smart, but they’re also resourceful, and fiercely protective of their young.
This is the story of a mother pig who would do anything to keep her babies safe. She was very pregnant when her owner loaded her onto a truck bound for the slaughterhouse. Somehow, she knew exactly where she was going.
On the road, she managed to break free of her cage. Once out, the job wasn’t done. From there, she leapt from the truck, which was speeding down the highway toward certain death. Amazingly, she landed in a patch of soft grass, unharmed.
Animal control workers brought her in, and it didn’t take long for her to give birth to fourteen wee little piglets. Unfortunately, five of them didn’t survive, probably due to stress.
Since no one from the farm where she was raised came forward, the pig and all her children were turned over to Animal Place, a 600 acre sanctuary in Grass Valley, California. They staff named her Rita, and gave her and her young’uns a forever home.
