‘The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson’ had some wild guests over the years, but none were as outlandish as Robin Williams. The comedian took over the show with his ranting and riffing while Johnny sat back and enjoyed it.
Right from the start, Robin goes into his comedy after greeting Johnny. He says in a preacher’s voice, ‘Believe! Believe that comedy can heal you! Praise the power!’ Johnny laughs, and they sit and begin the interview.
Robin smiles real big and says, ‘Mama, I’m on TV!’ Johnny can’t even get the first question off for about two minutes because he and Robin go back and forth with impressions and comedic quips.
Johnny complements Robin’s outfit. Robin says, ‘Yeah, somewhere there’s a car seat that’s envious.’ as he references his pants. He is wearing shiny black pants with a black jacket and a white button-up shirt.
He says right before he came out, his body started to let everything go, and he had to use the restroom right as the curtains opened because of his nerves! They talk about how people think performers usually don’t get nervous. Johnny asks if Robin gets nervous because he seems very comfortable, and Robin tells him he’s a very nervous person.
Robin says he also has dyslexia. ‘I was the only child on my block on Halloween to go rick or trout.’ The crowd laughs as he smiles. Robin then asks Johnny for a sip of his mug, and Johnny says it’s ok.
Robin says, ‘Don’t be afraid; the sores went away,’ and the crowd laughs. ‘A real man can stand up to herpes,’ Robin says triumphantly, cheering with Johnny’s mug in the air. The laughter and improvisation continue through the whole interview with the loveable Robin.
