Every so often a question about the benefits of celebrity pops up, but rarely are we discussing the negative aspects of being famous. For Sarah Blackwood of Walk Off the Earth, a simple plane trip turned into a nightmare after she was kicked off the plane.
The problem is that Blackwood and United Airlines are telling entirely different stories about why she was kicked off the plane. We’ll tell the facts and you can decide!
Blackwood was flying from San Francisco to Vancouver on Wednesday when her flight was forced to return to the gate. The airline says that she was asked to restrain her child several times but refused to do so, allowing the toddler to adventure down the aisle as the plane was taxiing to the runway.
Blackwood is claiming that she is being discriminated against for being a mother, tweeting after the incident, “Just got kicked off a @united flight because my son was crying really loud. Stayed calm but overall #Discrimination #motherhaters”
Whether it was her child’s wandering or his crying, suggesting that a flight attendant was discriminating against you for being a mother is slightly ridiculous. Pregnant women are typically given many accommodations, especially during flight so it really wouldn’t make sense for one employee to go and turn that all around.
The airline defended themselves in a statement, saying, “Despite numerous requests, the child was not seated, as required by federal regulation to ensure passenger safety.” It seems like a simple conclusion, until you hear from other passengers.
According to Yahoo the other passengers disagreed with the airline’s decision, saying that the child was asleep by the time they got back down to the ground. They might also just have an issue with the airline because the entire experience set them back several hours, but who am I to question their motivations.
