The Shadows Take You to a ‘Wonderful Land’ in 1962

In 1962, the British band The Shadows made musical history with their hit instrumental “Wonderful Land.” It was a time when music began exploring new directions, and this track was the first to feature an orchestra. The result was a classic record that topped the UK, New Zealand, Israel, Ireland, and South Africa charts.

The Shadows

The song was written by Jerry Lordan, who wrote the UK chart-toppers “Apache” for The Shadows and “Diamonds” for ex-Shadows Jet Harris and Tony Meehan. Lordan revealed that the title was not his as he struggled to find a fitting name. Hank Marvin, The Shadows’ lead guitarist, suggested “Wonderful Land,” referring to America. Lordan didn’t like the name but couldn’t think of anything better, so the name stuck.

In an interview, Bruce Welch of The Shadows said that they recorded the song knowing something was missing and had it in the can for nine months. Then, while they were on tour, Norrie Paramour, an older and trained musician, added French horns, strings, and a little vocal bit, transforming it into a classic record they were thrilled about.

The Shadows

The Shadows were in a period of transition when they recorded “Wonderful Land.” It was the last single to feature drummer Tony Meehan, who had left the group and was replaced by Brian Bennett. By the time the song was released, Jet Harris had also gone to be replaced by Brian Locking.

The track’s popularity is undeniable, and even after sixty years, it still resonates with audiences. One commenter on the video said, “Hank Marvin plays with emotion & little strain as he still does 60 years later – a true master.” The Shadows are one of the finest bands of the ’60s, and the sentiment is shared by many. Another commenter remarked, “It’s refreshing to hear this in our crazy world today. Kick back and enjoy life as we can! Thank you for the music!”
