Just about everyone likes a story about a bully getting a well-deserved comeuppance. Here’s a grocery shopper’s story about how another customer was got her just deserts after verbally abusing a bagger with a mental disability.
This bagger is just about the sweetest man in the world and he’s also really good at his job. When he spotted a hole in our shopper’s canvas grocery bag, he asked her if she wanted him to use it anyway. When she thanked him and said to just use another one, an impatient woman in line behind her barked, “God! Hurry it up!”
“I just finished paying. He’s fine.”
“Oh, so you’re slow like him, too? God, all you special people need to stop interfering with normal people.”
The bagger, looking offended, chimed in: “She’s not not-smart. She goes to…” (he pointed to the university logo on her clothing) “…She’s real smart.”
“And he’s the best bagger here! He’s very careful ma’am, which is a good thing with groceries.”
As the bagger handed over the groceries, the impatient woman growled, “Retard.”
While all that was going on, the cashier was silent. But now, very calmly, she told the impatient woman, “Refusal of service for massive discrimination towards a valued employee, as well as a regular customer. You may leave your items here, we’ll shelve them later. Please leave.” Instead of leaving, Mrs. Impatient completely lost it, unleashing a ruckus that left a shelf broken. She actually had to be physically restrained! Meanwhile, the bagger hurried our shopper and another customer to a safe location behind the cigarette counter.
A social experiment television show called “What Would You Do?” picked up on this story and decided to see how people would react in just this situation. We’ve posted the video for you below.
