Growing up in the 1960s was a time of simplicity and freedom that kids today can hardly imagine. Life moved at a slower pace back then, without all the distractions and complications of modern technology.
We had to be self-sufficient and responsible from a young age. Winding your watch every morning, walking to school alone, carrying your books – it instilled discipline and independence. Our parents didn’t coddle us, even if it meant a few scrapes and bruises along the way.
There was a wholesomeness to the era despite the turbulent times. Families gathered around the TV to watch westerns together. We’d spend all day outside using our imaginations, not glued to screens. Getting that first job as a teen filled you with real pride.
Maybe it’s just nostalgia talking, but I believe we were better off in many ways. We knew the value of a dollar, the importance of respect, the joys of simple pleasures. It shaped who we are.
Sometimes, I long for those days again. The smell of cap gun smoke, the feel of a heavy book in your arms, the taste of a cold soda at the corner shop after a long bike ride. They’re memories I’ll always cherish.
