It’s not every 11-year-old who could stand up and perform in front of a large live audience and a television audience beyond. But then Serena Rigacci isn’t just any 11-year-old. This young lady from Italy can sing, and she proved it on the Romanian version of the talent-spotting TV show “Next Star.” The song she performed wasn’t an easy one, either: Whitney Houston’s version of “I Will Always Love You.”
Coincidentally, Whitney Houston was 11 years old when she began singing in the junior gospel choir at a local church. Her mother was a gospel singer, and there were other musical talents in the family, so it’s not surprising that she had some ability.
Although still just a teenager, Houston became a successful model (appearing in fashion magazines and commercials) while pursuing a musical career at the same time. In 1985, Houston released her first album and over the next year, her fame quickly grew. She went on to sell over 200 million records and win numerous awards (including multiple Grammys). She also has some movie and TV acting credits to her name. Sadly, Houston passed away in 2012, only 48 years old.
“I Will Always Love You” is one of Whitney Houston’s most memorable songs and was the best-selling single by a woman, ever. The original (country) version of the song was written by Dolly Parton and was itself a huge success. Houston’s reinterpretation of the song was created for the movie “The Bodyguard” in which she starred along with Kevin Costner. As a New York Times critic remarked, “Houston transforms a plaintive country ballad into a towering pop-gospel assertion of lasting devotion to a departing lover.”
Check out the video posted below to see Serena’s superb rendition of “I Will Always Love You.” If matching the perfect original is impossible, she comes about as close as anyone can.
