An Acquaintance Kisses A Baby On The Mouth. What Happened Later Shocked Me.

Parents of newborn babies have enough to worry about when they bring their kids home from the hospital. There’s a long list of vaccinations that they have to go through for the first couple of years of their life. The one that had me terrified until my son got vaccinated was whooping cough. But a simple kiss on a baby’s face being deadly? That’s enough to make me want to crawl under a blanket and stay there until my son turns 18.

This video is about a baby named Brooke who was kissed on the mouth by an acquaintance. She was in the hospital a few days later and it turned out that the acquaintance had had a cold sore on her mouth, which gave Brooke herpes. Since her immune system was still weak, she was in intensive care for several days. She’s fine now, but it must have been so scary for her mommy and daddy.

I remember our son’s pediatrician saying to not even go to a place like a restaurant for the first two months of his life. His immune system needed to build up and exposing him to the hustle and bustle of a diner would be too much. It’s not like we had to put him in a plastic bubble at home, but we just watched who held him. It’s scary to think that something like this can happen to babies.

Now that I’m a father, I feel sad if I go on a bus or subway and see a young baby out and about – clearly under two months. I know that some parents might have to do this because they have to work, but it just isn’t in the best interest of the baby. My son is much older now and is in school where he sometimes gets sick from classmates, but it’s not quite the same as before. Oh, who am I kidding? I want to get back under that blanket.
