Columbo: “The man who fired the gun is still in this room”

Peter Falk as ‘Columbo’ is America’s favorite detective. He solves each case with style and wit, making it great tv viewing. The show ‘Columbo’ ran from 1971 to 1978 and even made a slight comeback from 1989 to 2003.

This episode titled, ‘Candidate for Crime’ features a twisted politician who tries to get away with murder. Nelson Hayward decides to fake an assassination attempt on his life to through Columbo off the trail.

Feeling the heat from Columbo’s investigation, Nelson Hayward retreats to his private room to make a few phone calls. This is a cover to give him time to recreate a fake assassination attempt.

While Nelson is in the room, he takes out a pistol with a silencer and shoots through the screen glass door, leaving a hole in the wall near the desk.

Later, when he is finally confronted by Columbo in the same hotel room, Nelson demands that Columbo take the bullet out of the wall to see if it matches the one used to commit the murder earlier in the episode.

The slick Columbo is always a step ahead of the criminals. He tells Nelson he already had the bullet tested, and it does match the murder weapon. Nelson feels confident until Columbo springs a surprise on him.

He tells Nelson that he came into the room and took the bullet out of the wall three hours before Nelson told him he had been shot at! That means Columbo knows Nelson tried to stage the fake assassination, and he is the real killer. Columbo gets his man again in this exciting twist ending.
